The Massachusetts General Hospital, shown here in an 1828 engraving, was chartered in 1811 and opened on Fruit Street in 1821 in a building designed by Charles Bulfinch, Boston's leading architect of the period. A. Bowen published the plate as an illustration in the second edition of Caleb Hopkins Snow's *A History of Boston*, a survey of the city from its origins to the late 1820s. Its place in a civic history reflects how central the hospital had become to the city's sense of itself. The print's orderly rendering of the brick façade is worth a closer look.
