Ali Riza Bey, a lieutenant colonel on the Ottoman General Staff, is credited in the caption of this view of the Süleymaniye Camii, the imperial mosque in Istanbul that Suleiman the Magnificent commissioned and the architect Mimar Sinan completed in 1557. The print is numbered 15 in an album of mosques, fountains, mausoleums and city views, with captions in both Ottoman Turkish and French. It belongs to the Abdul-Hamid II Collection, which documents how the monuments of the old city were recorded in the late nineteenth century.
