This drawing shows a review of Gen. Ord's division across the river from Fredericksburg, Virginia, in May 1862, with Maj. Gen. Irvin McDowell and his staff watching the troops. That spring McDowell's corps was kept near Fredericksburg to guard the approach to Washington rather than join the Peninsula campaign against Richmond, a decision that drew lasting criticism. Drawings like this one, made early in the war, offer a close look at the ceremony and camp life of an army that would fight in and around the town again in December 1862.
