The subject here is the Koran stand in the mosque, or khanaka, of the Shah-i-Zinda, which holds a copy of the Quran donated by the Bukharan Emir Nasrullah. The Shah-i-Zinda, or "Living King," is a hillside necropolis in Samarkand, a rising row of tiled mausoleums built around the shrine of Qusam ibn Abbas, a figure revered locally as a cousin of the Prophet Muhammad. Russian photographers documented the monuments after Russia took Samarkand in 1868, and this view was reproduced as plate 62 in the archaeological volume of the *Turkestan Album*, issued in 1871 and 1872.
