Karabulak, a village in the Syr Darya oblast, and a locality called Dun-Tepe anchor this albumen print, which was made between 1865 and 1872. It was reproduced as plate 99 in the ethnographic section of the *Turkestan Album*, issued in parts in 1871 and 1872, when Russia had recently brought the region under its administration. The album's views of Turkic settlements were meant to document local dwellings and village layouts for an imperial audience. Worth noticing is how the houses are treated as evidence of everyday life rather than as scenery.
