Inside the Kokand Khanate's capital, the gate to the khan's palace is the focus, with soldiers stationed before it. The scene records a city that Russian forces would annex in 1876, only a few years after this photograph was made. The print was reproduced in the Turkestan Album, a multi-part photographic survey from the early 1870s that documented the peoples, buildings and landscapes of Turkestan. Its value lies in the view of a palace entrance and the military presence there, both recorded in albumen during a period of rapid change in the region.
