Cumberland Landing, on the Pamunkey River in eastern Virginia, served as a major supply point for the Army of the Potomac in the spring of 1862, when Gen. George B. McClellan was advancing up the peninsula toward Richmond. This panoramic view records the army's encampment there in May, with tents spread across the open ground above the river. Steamers and barges moved food, ammunition and forage up the Pamunkey to the army's depots. The scene shows how much of the campaign depended on logistics as well as on battle.
