Andrew Jackson Montague, a Virginia lawyer and Democrat, served as governor of Virginia from 1902 to 1906 and later went to Congress, and this portrait shows him around 1913, when he was active in Washington politics. The print was made by Harris & Ewing, a Washington studio founded in 1905 that became known for its formal portraits of officeholders, members of Congress, and other public figures. Such studio portraits were widely reproduced in newspapers and public records of the era, so they serve as a useful visual record of the men who shaped national and state affairs in the early twentieth century.
