Few funerals of a former president were captured in stereo, and this card records the burial of Andrew Johnson at Greenville, Tennessee, on August 3, 1875. Johnson, who had succeeded Abraham Lincoln and survived impeachment by a single vote in 1868, had returned to the U.S. Senate only months before his death that summer. Stereographs like this one were sold in large numbers in the 1870s, and viewed through a stereoscope, the paired images gave the crowd and the graveside a sense of depth. The card was issued by the photographer L.W. Keen, whose name appears on the mount.
