This photoprint shows the French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, who died in 1875, two years before this portrait was published in the *Galerie Contemporaine*, a French series of photographic portraits of notable figures in the arts, letters, and sciences. Carpeaux, born in Valenciennes, was one of the leading sculptors of the Second Empire, known for the lively, emotional figures of his public commissions, including *The Dance* on the facade of the Paris Opéra. Because the publication date comes after his death, the portrait likely drew on an earlier likeness and served as a memorial tribute to him.
