Chemist and statesman Jean Baptiste André Dumas, whose lifespan of 1800 to 1884 is given in the title, is the subject of this engraved portrait. Dumas was a leading figure in nineteenth-century chemistry, known for careful work on atomic weights and for a laboratory method of measuring nitrogen in organic compounds that is still used today. He also held public office under the Second Empire, serving as minister of agriculture and commerce and later as a senator, which made him a prominent figure well beyond the laboratory. The print was made by the engraver C.H. Jeens, but the caption card does not record a date.
