Jean Sylvain Bailly, the astronomer, is the subject here, and the portrait shows a man better known for the sky than for the street. Bailly studied celestial motion and wrote a widely read history of astronomy before the Revolution, and he was elected to the Academy of Sciences. In 1789 he became the first mayor of Paris, a post he held through the early years of the upheaval until he ordered troops to fire on a crowd in 1791, an act that cost him popular support. He was guillotined in November 1793. The card gives no date for this engraving, so it is best read as a later likeness made to commemorate a man whose career ended in the Terror.
