The sitter is most likely Heinrich Bullinger, the Swiss Reformed theologian who succeeded Huldrych Zwingli as head of the church in Zurich and who lived from 1504 to 1575. The record spells the name "Fullinger," which appears to be a transcription error. Because lithography was not invented until the 1790s, long after Bullinger's death, any lithographic image of him must be a later reproduction, probably based on an earlier portrait or engraving. Bullinger's letters, sermons and his widely read *Second Helvetic Confession* made him one of the most influential voices of the Reformation outside Wittenberg and Geneva, and later printmakers often revived his likeness for that reason.
