Joseph Chamberlain, the British statesman who served as Colonial Secretary and was a leading figure in the Liberal and later Liberal Unionist parties, is the subject of this portrait, a photoprint issued by the Rotary Photo company. The record gives no date, so the image has to be placed by its style and the printing process rather than by a caption. Chamberlain was famous for his monocle and carefully groomed appearance, and portraits of him circulated widely in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when his campaigns for tariff reform and imperial unity made him one of the most recognizable public men in Britain.
