Few stations in the Ottoman Empire carried as much weight as the one shown here, the terminus of the Hejaz Railway at Medina, photographed just outside the city's West Gate. The line reached Medina in 1908, built to carry pilgrims toward Mecca and to link Damascus with the holy cities. Berlin publisher Dietrich Riemer issued the view as No. 65 in a 1916 portfolio of images from Palestine, northern Arabia and the Sinai, and the caption card dates it to 1914, though that date is unverified. The photographer, B. Moritz, was a German geographer whose work reflects German interest in the region in the years before and during the First World War.
