A plain city street, rather than a mosque or monument, is the focus here: the caption identifies it as the main street of the western quarter of Medina, in the Hejaz, under the names Ambarije or Rischadije. Medina was the southern terminus of the Ottoman Hejaz Railway, completed in 1908, which brought new traffic and visitors to the city. The photoprint is by B. Moritz, a German photographer, and comes from a portfolio of views of Palestine, northern Arabia and the Sinai published in Berlin by Dietrich Riemer in 1916. The date of about 1914 is unverified, so the picture is best read as a glimpse of everyday street life in the late Ottoman period.
