The title names a specific place, the Westtor, or West Gate, in the walled Red Sea port of Jiddah. The port was the main gateway for pilgrims traveling toward Mecca, about 45 miles inland, and its gates marked the edge of the crowded commercial quarter. The print is plate 82 in a portfolio of photographs by B. Moritz, published in Berlin in 1916 as *Bilder aus Palästina, Nord Arabien und dem Sinai*. It reflects the German interest in recording Ottoman-era lands in the Near East.
