Taken from the east minaret of the Holy Mosque in Mecca, this view puts the Zamzam house, which shelters the sacred well of Zamzam, in the foreground, with the Kaaba rising behind it. The print is by the photographer B. Moritz and appears as No. 76 in a portfolio of views from Palestine, northern Arabia and the Sinai, published in Berlin by Dietrich Riemer in 1916. Non-Muslims were barred from Mecca, so photographs of the sanctuary from this period were rare, and this vantage point shows the mosque's layout and architecture in the years before the First World War.
