Titled *Das Zeitalter der Reformation* ("The Age of the Reformation"), this engraving presents the sixteenth-century religious upheaval as a whole era rather than a single event. The Reformation is usually dated to 1517, when Martin Luther published his Ninety-five Theses, and over the following decades it split western Christendom and reshaped politics, learning, and art across German-speaking lands and beyond. Nineteenth-century printmakers often returned to Luther and his age, seeing in it a founding moment for Protestant national identity. The record dates the piece only to the 1800s, so it is best read as a picture of how later generations remembered that turning point.
