Rather than a station or a locomotive, this plate shows the unglamorous work of ballasting, when crews spread crushed stone along the bed to hold the ties and rails in place. It documents construction of the Hejaz Railway, the Ottoman line begun at Damascus in 1900 and extended south toward Medina, which was completed in 1908. Published as plate 55 in a 1916 Berlin portfolio of views from Palestine, northern Arabia, and the Sinai, the photoprint by B. Moritz preserves a record of the workers who built the desert route.
