A beylerbey, the title for a provincial governor and senior military commander in the Ottoman Empire, appears here mounted on horseback and posed for a campaign, as the German caption explains. The engraving was published in Everhard Guernier Happel's *Thesaurus exoticorum*, a Hamburg compendium of travel reports and curiosities from distant lands, printed in 1688. Images like this one helped European readers picture Ottoman officials, whose dress and equipment were often described in print but rarely seen firsthand.
