The distinctive detail here is the telephone itself: Secretary of State Frank B. Kellogg is shown speaking with the Austrian chancellor, with J. Reuben Clark, Edgar L.G. Prochnik and C.T. Claggett gathered around him at the State Department in Washington. The occasion was the formal opening of direct transatlantic telephone service between the United States and Austria on November 3, 1928. Commercial overseas telephony was still new then, and ceremonies like this one were meant to show that a spoken conversation could now cross the Atlantic as readily as a cable message. The photograph was made by Underwood & Underwood, a press photography firm that supplied newspapers with images of official events.
