Muzdalifah, the open ground between Arafat and Mina just outside Mecca, is where pilgrims on the Hajj gather for the night after leaving Arafat and before the stoning rites at Mina. This plate is the twelfth in *Bilder aus Mekka*, a portfolio published by the Dutch firm E.J. Brill in Leiden in 1889. Its maker, the Dutch orientalist Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje, lived in Mecca for several months in the 1880s, and his photographs record pilgrim life at a time when few outsiders could enter the holy city.
