Bonito Bend, as the title records, sits on the river between Labyrinth and Stillwater Canyons, where the water winds past rock walls and small islands. The print is dated 1871 and was probably made by O.E. Beaman, a photographer who worked with John Wesley Powell's survey of the Colorado River that year. Field photography then was laborious: glass plates were heavy and fragile, exposures ran long, and chemicals had to be mixed and used on site. Images like this gave readers far from the canyons their first visual sense of country that had been known mainly through the reports of men who traveled it by boat.
