The title names the subject outright: a stroller on Fifth Avenue, New York's most fashionable promenade, adopting the Grecian bend, the forward-tilted stance that was the height of style around 1868. Thomas Worth, whose signature appears on the image, was a caricaturist who produced many comic prints for Currier & Ives, and his work often mocked the excesses of city fashion. The posture took its name from a supposed resemblance to classical Greek statuary, and the bustle that exaggerated it drew steady ridicule in the popular press of the period.
