Santoya, or Seventh Avenue type" is a watercolor caricature of a woman, drawn in the exaggerated, stylized manner that made Miguel Covarrubias known. The Mexican artist arrived in New York in 1923 and became a familiar figure in Harlem's literary and nightlife circles, sketching performers, writers and street personalities for magazines such as Vanity Fair. This sheet was reproduced in Negro Drawings, his 1927 book of portraits published by Alfred A. Knopf, which brought his Harlem caricatures to a wide audience. The title's reference to Seventh Avenue, the commercial heart of Harlem, points to the neighborhood's street life and fashion as a subject he set out to record.
