Rather than a finished page, this item is a sheet of working drawings for Frederic Goudy's Friar typeface, showing letterforms sketched out before they could be cut into metal type. Goudy, one of the most prolific American type designers of the twentieth century, typically drew his letters by hand and refined them over many revisions before a face went to the foundry or the Monotype machine. Sheets like this reveal the designer's decisions about curves, spacing, and proportion. The caption card records no date, so the sheet's exact origin is unknown, but it offers a direct look at how a typeface took shape on paper.
