This print reproduces a passage from Abraham Lincoln's speech at Alton, Illinois, on October 15, 1858, the last of the seven joint debates he held with Stephen A. Douglas that summer and fall. Lincoln kept newspaper clippings and printed material from the campaign in a scrapbook, and this excerpt comes from that collection. The debates drew large crowds and wide press coverage, and their arguments over slavery in the territories helped make Lincoln a nationally known figure, even though Douglas won the Senate seat.
