Taken from a photograph by Brady, this portrait of Abraham Lincoln was reproduced as an engraving by W.G. Jackman, who translated a photographic likeness into a fine-line print that could be run off in quantity. Dated to about 1865, the year Lincoln was assassinated, it shows how strongly the public wanted his image during and after the Civil War. Engravings like this were among the main ways Americans saw the president's face before photographs were routinely printed in newspapers, and the copyright credit to Rice, Rutter & Co. points to the commercial trade in such portraits.
