This engraving reproduces a painting by Emanuel Leutze, the German-born American artist better known for *Washington Crossing the Delaware*. Its subject is iconoclasm, the destruction of religious images, a theme that recalls the Reformation and the Puritan campaigns against religious art. Engraver Alfred Jones translated Leutze's painted composition into black-and-white lines in 1850, letting the scene reach viewers who could never have seen the original canvas. Prints like this one were a common way for mid-century Americans to encounter European history painting.
