This aquatint shows West Point as seen from the Phillipstown shore, looking across the Hudson toward the Military Academy on its bluffs. William James Bennett painted and engraved the view, and the color aquatint was published in New York by Parker & Clover around 1831. The United States Military Academy had been founded in 1802 and was still a small, closely watched post in the early 1830s, so the print captures a place that was both a training ground for army engineers and a natural showpiece on one of the country's most admired rivers. Bennett's river views were popular with a public eager to see American scenery, and this one is worth noticing for how it frames the academy within the wooded hills and open water.
