Bodine, the trotting horse named in this 1876 lithograph's title, is shown as a fast harness racer, a subject that drew crowds to tracks across the country in the 1870s. The New York firm Currier & Ives produced many sporting prints of celebrated trotters, which were sold cheaply to horse owners, racing fans and anyone who wanted a favorite animal on the parlor wall. The title's phrase "of the West" points to trotting interests that were spreading well beyond the East Coast. The print is listed in a Currier & Ives catalog raisonné, which makes it easy to place among the firm's sporting output.
