Lula, a trotting mare owned by Joseph Harker, is the subject here, and her pedigree appears in the title: she was sired by Alexander's Norman and out of a thoroughbred dam. Published by Currier & Ives in New York in 1874, this hand-colored lithograph belongs to the firm's long run of portraits of celebrated harness horses, which appealed to owners, breeders, and a public that followed trotting races across the Northeast. Such prints were prized for showing a horse's build and bearing, and the hand coloring varied from sheet to sheet, so each copy has its own tones.
