Hattie Woodward, a trotting mare by Aberdeen out of a dam by Henry Clay, is shown under the reins of her driver, Gus Wilson, in the light harness rig typical of the sport. Published by the New York firm Currier & Ives in 1881, the lithograph belongs to the company's long run of sporting prints celebrating well-known horses, which found a ready market among a public that followed trotting races and breeding farms closely. Prints like this gave people who never attended a meet a detailed picture of the animals and drivers who were local and national celebrities in that era.
