Nettie was a trotting mare, and this Currier & Ives lithograph celebrates her as the daughter of Rysdyk's Hambletonian, one of the most influential trotting sires of the nineteenth century, and as a celebrated performer in her own right. The Currier & Ives firm issued many sporting prints of famous horses in the 1870s, when harness racing and horse breeding were popular subjects with American buyers. Hand-coloring was applied to the lithograph after printing, so each impression varies slightly in tone. The print is catalogued as number 4791 in the firm's standard reference, which helps researchers trace it among the company's other equine portraits.
