Bella was sired by Rysdyk's Hambletonian, and her dam was by Jupiter Abdallah, both names that carried weight among American horse breeders. The "2:22" in the title is her record, the time in which she trotted a mile, and it marks her as a fast harness horse in an era when trotting drew large crowds and firm sponsors. Currier & Ives issued many prints of celebrated trotters in the 1870s, so this lithograph reflects the popular appetite for horses and their racing records.
