Moose is shown here as a trotter who set a record of 2:19½, meaning he covered a mile in just under two and a half minutes, a benchmark that drew crowds to the harness-racing tracks of the day. The print identifies him as a horse "by the Washburn horse," placing him in a bloodline that breeders prized for speed. Currier & Ives issued many such portraits in the 1880s, when trotting was a popular sport and owners wanted their champions shown in lively, detailed form. The lithograph is a useful record of how the sport and its celebrated animals were presented to the public.
