Patron was a trotting stallion whose name is printed right in the title, along with his sire line (by Pancoast) and dam (by Cuyler) and a record of 2:14 1/4, meaning he covered a mile in just over two minutes and fourteen seconds. That time put him among the fast harness horses of the 1880s, when trotting races drew large crowds and breeders prized speed on the track. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued many sporting and farm subjects, produced this 1887 lithograph as a portrait for admirers of the breed. Collectors can find it catalogued in the firm's standard reference, Currier & Ives: A catalog Raisonné, under number 1027.
