Nancy Hanks was a trotting mare whose name was set in harness-racing history by a record of 2:09, a pace fast enough to make her one of the most celebrated horses of her day. This Currier & Ives lithograph, published in New York around 1891 and hand-colored, shows her as a sporting subject, the kind of image prized by owners and fans who followed the racetrack closely. Currier & Ives produced many such prints for the American market in the late nineteenth century, when trotting races drew large crowds and horses like this one were national news. The print is catalogued in the firm's standard reference, which helps place it among the company's late sporting work.
