A trotting stallion named Nelson, sired by Young Rolfe and credited with a mile in 2:10, is the subject of this hand-colored lithograph. That speed placed him among the fast harness horses that drew crowds to American racetracks in the 1890s, when owning a celebrated trotter carried real prestige. Currier & Ives issued many portraits of famous horses like him, and Louis Maurer, whose signature appears on the image, was one of the firm's most prolific artists for sporting subjects. Each sheet was colored by hand, which gave these prints their bright, individual finish.
