Little beyond its title survives for this hand-colored lithograph, "The young mother," which bears a publisher's line naming N. Currier of New York. Currier issued prints like it between 1835 and 1856, before his partnership with James Merritt Ives began, and sold them cheaply to a broad middle-class public. Domestic scenes of mothers and children were a staple of the firm's output and reflect the sentimental taste of the period. The print is listed as number 7421 in the Gale Research catalog raisonné of Currier & Ives.
