The title sets up a before-and-after comparison: a young woman's choice of husband, then the same couple five years later, when the joke has turned against the bridegroom, who now serves as his wife's "slave." Keppler & Schwarzmann, the immigrant partners behind *Puck*, a leading American humor weekly of the 1880s and 1890s, used color lithographs like this one as full-page satire on courtship, marriage, and domestic power. The caption card dates it to the July 7, 1897 issue, page 16, though that detail is unverified. The cartoon's use of the language of slavery for a marital joke shows how freely the magazine's comic conventions borrowed from the politics of its day.
