Here the actress Helena Modjeska stands beside a well almost hidden under climbing roses, a garden setting that departs from the stage costumes she was known for. Born in Poland in 1840, Modjeska became one of the most admired performers on the English-speaking stage, celebrated for her Shakespearean roles and her turn as Marguerite in *Camille*, and she toured the United States for decades. The print was made by Wade Wineman, a Chicago photographer, and was registered for copyright, which protected studio portraits of well-known performers from unauthorized reproduction. Modjeska died in 1909, the year this portrait is dated.
