A rose-covered well on the grounds of Helena Modjeska's California home anchors this view, with the blooms framing the stonework. Modjeska, the Polish-born actress who was one of the most celebrated stage performers of her day, spent her later years at Arden, her estate in Santiago Canyon in Orange County. Her ease in performing in both Polish and English made her a famous figure on American stages, and the estate became a retreat she cultivated with gardens. The print was made around 1909, the year she died, and was copyrighted by Chicago photographer Wade Wineman.
