Among the bird plates in Audubon's *Birds of America*, this hand-colored print shows the rose-breasted grosbeak, a songbird of eastern North America whose males carry a bright rose-red patch on the breast. Audubon issued the series in parts from the 1820s into the 1830s, and the plates were printed in London with color added by hand, so no two copies look exactly alike. No date survives for this particular sheet, but Audubon's habit of posing birds in natural settings, rather than in stiff profile, set his work apart from earlier bird illustrations.
