Cassandre's *Étoile du Nord* was printed for the Compagnie du chemin de fer du Nord, and its title names the star that gives the railway its identity. The poster dates from early in Adolphe Mouron's career, when he was signing his work A.M. Cassandre, and it reflects the flat color, bold shapes, and graphic simplicity that defined French poster design in the late 1920s. Railway companies competed hard for travelers, so posters like this had to be read quickly from station walls and street kiosks. The 1928 date comes from an older caption card and is unverified, but the design fits the period.
