Few ocean liners of the 1930s drew as much attention as the SS Normandie, the French Line flagship whose maiden voyage came in 1935. This poster promotes that ship for the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique and was printed in Paris that year by Alliance Graphique. It is signed "A.M.," the pseudonym of Adolphe Mouron, better known as Cassandre, one of the most influential poster designers of the period. His bold geometric shapes and streamlined forms capture the Art Deco modernism that the Normandie itself was built to express.
