Nathaniel Currier's New York shop turned European news into a portrait of General Louis-Eugène Cavaignac, who was named provisional president of the French republic with dictatorial powers in late June 1848. He had just crushed the workers' uprising in Paris known as the June Days, a bloody street fight that followed the closing of the national workshops. The lithograph reached American buyers within months, showing how quickly European upheaval became a subject for domestic printshop walls. Hand coloring, typical of the firm's 1840s output, gives the portrait a bright immediacy.
