Titled "Genl. Dembinski: the Polish champion of liberty," this hand-colored lithograph honors Henryk Dembiński, a Polish officer who fought against Russian rule in the November Uprising of 1830–31. He later joined the Hungarian revolt against Habsburg rule in 1848–49, and his name became a symbol of the nationalist uprisings that stirred Europe at the time. Published by Nathaniel Currier in New York around 1849, the print shows how eagerly American publishers followed those struggles, turning a foreign soldier into a figure for popular audiences at home.
