Here the statue is shown holding aloft a "Star Lamp," a detail the title stresses and that sets this print apart from simpler views of the monument. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's colossal figure, a gift from the people of France, was still awaiting its pedestal when this lithograph appeared around 1885. Currier & Ives, the New York firm at 115 Nassau Street known for popular sheets on current events, issued it to capture public enthusiasm before the statue was dedicated in 1886. The image shows how the lamp and torch became the statue's most recognizable symbol.
